General information

Short Summary
A Berlin based university has discovered a polymeric hydrogen fluoride compound (Crospovidone-HF), a method of preparing the polymeric hydrogen fluoride compound by immobilizing hydrogen fluoride (HF), and the use of the polymeric hydrogen fluoride compound to store and provide hydrogen fluoride (HF). The university is looking for partners to cooperate in exploitation in the framework of a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a research and development agreement.
Full Description
Hydrogen fluoride is very important as a basic chemical for the production of fluorinated compounds, which are used as pharmaceutical agents, agrochemicals, coolants or plastics, as well as in the electrical industry and materials chemistry.

A German university based in Berlin has discovered a polymeric hydrogen fluoride compound (Crospovidone-HF). It is a highly cross-linked homopolymer that can absorb (and swell) hydrogen fluoride up to six times its weight. The solid thus obtained can be stored at low temperatures (-30°C) and in a suitable container in the refrigerator (8°C) for several months. At room tempera¬ture, gaseous impurity-free hydrogen fluoride can escape from the Crospovidone-HF polymer in a relatively short time (<5 minutes). The university has also developed a method of preparing the compound by immobilizing hydrogen fluoride and of using the the polymeric hydrogen fluoride compound to store and provide hydrogen fluoride.
The hydrogen fluoride released by Crospovidone-HF can be used to prepare fluorine compounds with little effort (a), free of impurities from excipients (b), and efficiently (c).

The university is interested in a cooperation in the framework of a license agreement or a research cooperation agreement. A future licensee would have the authorization to use the technology in return for a fee or a share of royalties. The university would also agree to a research cooperation agreement that aims at the joint further development of the technology.
Advantages and Innovations
Because hydrogen fluoride is gaseous at room temperature and also highly corrosive/toxic, improper handling is harmful to health. Crospovidone-HF has some advantages over industry standard handling with hydrogen fluoride:
a) In contrast to hydrogen fluoride stored in compressed gas cylinders, handling Crospovidone-HF does not require dedicated (stainless steel) equipment.
b) Hydrogen fluoride dissolved by Crospovidone-HF, compared to HF sources in which HF is bound in the form of liquid chemical compounds or as a solid salt, is free of potentially undesirable excipients because the carrier-polymer precipitates during the reaction. This is accompanied by lower losses of reactivity or undesirable interactions in the product mixture.
c) Crospovidone-HF, with an achievable mass fraction of hydrogen fluoride of up to 0.86 and a significantly higher reaction time, operates more efficiently than similarly working solutions published to date (poly- [4-vinylpyridinium-poly- (hydrogen fluoride)]).

Partner Sought

Expected Role of a Partner
The university is looking for partners from the chemical or pharma industry or research for a commercial agreement (e.g. license) or a research cooperation agreement.

In the framework of a license agreement partners like industry, SMEs or academic would be authorized to use the licensed technology.

In a research cooperation agreement the partner could be industry, a SME, a research organisation or a university to further develop the technology together.
