General information

Short Summary
An Italian SME has developed and patented a system that allows the use of electricity produced from renewable sources in self-consumption mode. By using the new system, any electricity device can easily integrate renewable generators and becoming more efficient and more eco friendly.
The company is interested in finding collaboration partners to test and adapt the solution in different application areas, within a Commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Full Description
The Italian SME has patented, developed and tested a technology that simplifies, and therefore can increase, the use of renewable generators. The new system can be used in traditional markets that are already using renewable generators, as in the household, or in new markets such as Smart Cities.
The proposed system is an energy mixer allowing a self-consumption mode, where the electricity produced by the renewable generators is used in the same place of its production. This feature makes possible the use of renewable energy plants fitted to the real needs of the consumer, simplifying installation when the available space is limited.
It is known that the amount of energy supplied by renewable generators relies on the environmental conditions: a photovoltaic panel will generates energy from the amount of light that hits it, as well as the wind generator relies on the wind speed. The optimal conditions are not always present, and often the production of renewable energy is not sufficient for the specific user, causing inefficiency.
The new technology aim is to manage the energy flow coming from different generators, and then feed the load with the sum of them. A typical application is the mix between the energy supplied by photovoltaic panels and the energy supplied by the electricity grid. The energy output to the device will always be all the energy from renewable source, and the rest will be the grid, since the system will massimize the renewable energy use. Other combinations are possible, for example having two types of renewable generators such as photovoltaic panels and wind generators, in addition to the electricity grid.
Regarding the technology development status, until now three different products have been developed:
- an energy optimixer for outdoors devices, such as traffic light systems;
- a charging station for soft mobility;
- a system for housing modules and homes.
A prototype that uses the energy mixing technology has been operational since September 2021, supplying energy to a data transmission device. It manages a photovoltaic plant with a total power of 945Wp, mixing with the mains 500W continuous output power.
The energy mixing system is protected by an European patent.
The Italian company is looking for new collaborations abroad, with the aim to:
- adapt the technology to specific new application
- test the solution in different use sectors
- commercialize the enery-mixer on foreign markets.
The proposed collaboration type is Commercial agreement with technical assistance.
Advantages and Innovations
The main innovative aspects of the system are the following:
- it allows a self-consumption mode: the place of energy production and consumption is the same, simplifying the renewable plant implementation and reducing its maintenance;
- it maximizes the use of renewable source generators, decreasing the use of fossil sources and increasing energy savings;
- it ensures a high degree of safety, required in all applications where energy continuity is a fundamental aspect;
- it simplifies and speeds up the application of renewable energy source, since all procedures requested to introduce electricity into the national grid (implying slowdowns and sometimes even real obstacles) are not required;
- it makes differend sources data available to the user, giving the possibility of applying predictive maintenance methods;
- the system can be easly integrateg inside the electrical equipment to be powered (for example a traffice light), and in complete autonomy can manage the energy mixing, increasing the device’s efficiency.
