General information

Short Summary
A UK company has developed a new material made from biomass derived non-wood fibres, typically wheat straw pulp (can be 100% post harvest straw). This biodegradable and compostable material can be used to make strong disposable packaging products for the food processing sector and to pack fresh vegetables and fruits.
Full Description
The company has its origins in the simple idea of using biomass derived materials non-wood fibres, typically post-harvest wheat straw pulp products to substitute plastic and cardboard food packaging.

Replacing paper and plastic food packaging and single use throw away items with straw replacements is the company’s mission. Currently, paper products are recyclable only if no plastic or chemicals are used in their manufacture and paper originates from trees, which take years to grow, and have the added benefit of carbon storage.

This biodegradable and compostable material packaging has been tested for structural integrity in life cycle and shelf life that matches plastic alternatives and meets the requirements of waterproofing.

The partner sought is to primarily manufacture the products under licence. However, there are other areas of support that would help the partnership grow: -

1. The ability to test the products with food processors and packagers, to further fine tune the design of the products
2. The ability to scale up manufacture as required, and
3. The capability to act as a distributor for the products into the food sector
Advantages and Innovations
1. It is made from a wheat cereal waste product
2. Straw pulp-based products are easily recycled and use less energy in their recovery, whilst causing less pollution and environmental impact.
3. Has the potential to reduce costs for the food grower and or processor.
