General information

Short Summary
A Northern German institute has developed a battery-free acoustic wireless communication system that enables low-cost structural monitoring with small devices, where low power consumption and wireless communication and data transfer are beneficial.
Full Description
A Northern German institute is conducting research in the field of acoustic backscatter communication and investigates use cases for structural monitoring.

Oftentimes, sensors for industrial and structural health monitoring are installed in shielded and hard-to-reach places where wireless communication is beneficial but radio communication Is infeasible or impossible due to regulations or environmental aspects. Nevertheless, research has shown that acoustic wireless power transfer (WPT) and piezoelectric backscatter enable battery-less, wireless sensors in such scenarios. Based on this research, the institute has developed devices for simultaneous acoustic wireless communication and power transfer for through-metal communication.
The researchers’ expertise lies in the process design and software development for sensor-equipped hardware that is able to send and receive acoustic signals for specific analysis purposes.

The institute is looking for cooperation partners to apply sensor systems e.g in offshore infrastructure, bridge piers, nuclear power plant cooling ponds or even built-in inside concrete foundations.

Depending on the area of application and the subject of study, both hard- and software components can be customised accordingly.
The technology has been tested successfully in first pilot projects.
Advantages and Innovations
- The system’s hard- and software can be customized and equipped with different sensors for specific surroundings and subjects of interest.
- Maintenance and energy requirements can be minimized as the sensors can be powered without batteries and the data can be transmitted wirelessly.
- The technology is suitable for both, static and mobile measuring units.
- The key hardware modules are available for research purposes, well below market price.
